TIMBER PRODUCTS

Former Timber Products Sawmill, Fort Bragg, California, National Lumber Products Manufacturer

The company was involved in the comprehensive assessment of COPCs related to sawmill operations at a 435 acre site in California, which included petroleum hydrocarbon releases from industrial operations and USTs to soil and ground water. We advanced over 300 auger and direct-push borings, including into sediment underlying ponds using a pontoon-mounted direct-push drill rig, and prepared documentation of the investigation activities.

Operating Lumber Distribution Center, California, National Lumber Products Manufacturer

We are currently monitoring an active lumber and building products distribution facility in compliance with a Containment Zone Management Plan (CZMP) approved by the RWQCB. The CZMP requires monitoring of wells located in the following areas on a semi-annual basis:

  • Within the former source area (to evaluate whether chemical concentrations increase or decrease over time)
  • Downgradient of the former source area (to provide an early indication if chemicals become mobile)
  • At the downgradient boundary of the containment zone (to evaluate whether chemicals are migrating out of the containment zone)

The principal objective of the CZMP is to monitor any potential migration of COCs outside the designated contaminated zone. The monitoring program intent is not only to monitor any potential migrating trends but also to initiate a remedial plan should concentration increases.

Although monitoring has not indicated migration of COCs outside the containment zone we have implemented a program of ORC ® injection to advance remediation of the site toward closure.

Former Box Manufacturing Plant, South San Francisco, California, National Lumber Products Manufacturer

We have recently finished site remediation at the former corrugated box manufacturing plant in the city of South San Francisco and is currently preparing a site closure report for issuance of a No Further Action letter by San Mateo County. The site is a 16-acre facility with multiple petroleum and halogenated release points that impacted soil and ground water. We conducted a comprehensive soil and ground water assessment and impacted soil was excavated and shipped off-site. Currently, we conducs quarterly ground water monitoring at the site. The site is undergoing redevelopment from former industrial use to a biomedical research facility, impacting the closure requirements. We are currently advising our confidential client on closure strategy and acts as a liaison with the County on negotiations. We will continue to conduct ground water monitoring for at least another year.
